Registration for the Winter/Spring Session of Winter Swim is open!

New Wave Program

Reston Swim Team Association (RSTA) offers a New Wave program to develop swimmers who are not quite ready for swim team but are interested in joining an RSTA team. RSTA Coaches work with swimmers to improve their technique and build their endurance to prepare them to join an RSTA team during the latter part of the summer season. The program is open to all swimmers between the ages of 5 - 12. Basic swimming skills are a prerequisite.

  • Swimmers that meet swim team criteria mid-season can elevate to an RSTA team (with open slots) of their choosing!

 

All new swimmers registering for any RSTA program will need to be evaluated through our New Swimmer Placement process to determine whether they are ready for RSTA swimming. During our New Swimmer Placement sessions we will determine if your swimmer is 1) ready to swim for a team; 2) close, but not quite ready, which would recommend them for the New Wave program; 3) not able to swim with enough proficiency to meet our minimum requirements, in which case we would recommend the swimmer receive lessons to boost their skills. The Registrar will contact families with results of the New Swimmer Placements and let you know where we can place your swimmer.

 

Proficiency Thresholds for New Wave

  • Able to kick on kickboard without assistance
  • Able to swim 10 meters freestyle continuously without assistance
  • Able to swim 10 meters on back without assistance
  • Willingness and ability to follow coaching direction
  • For those ages 9 and up -- unable to swim a full 50 meters freestyle and backstroke

Location:  Lake Newport Pool, 11601 Lake Newport Road, Reston

Fees:  Non-RA members will need to either join RA and get a pool pass for their swimmer or they will need to pay additional fees.  Scholarships are available.
