Registration for the Winter/Spring Session of Winter Swim is open!

RSTA Winter Swim Program

Program Description

The RSTA Winter Swim program offers swimmers the opportunity to continue their swim development during the colder months. The program is hosted at the Reston Community Center where coaches work with swimmers to improve their stroke technique and endurance. It is broken into two sessions: Fall/Winter (September–December) and Winter/Spring (January–May).

This program is ideal for swimmers who have previously participated in summer swim team or equivalent lessons as it focuses on improving proper stroke technique and endurance. It is not a learn-to-swim program.

Swimmers registering for Winter Swim should be able to:

  • Swim at least 50 meters comfortably without stopping
  • Demonstrate the use of all four competitive strokes
  • Swim unassisted for the full duration of the hour-long practice

Swimmers must meet the designated age by the start of the session.

New Wave in the Winter

Winter Swim also incorporates our New Wave program, aimed at developing swimmers looking to build on their skills to be ready for swim team in the summer. The expectation is that swimmers entering this program have previously completed swim lessons with an accredited program and can move across the pool unassisted. The program will focus on improving technique while building endurance and confidence to ready swimmers for summer swim team. These are not introductory learn-to-swim lessons.

Proficiency Thresholds for New Wave

  • Able to kick on kickboard without assistance
  • Able to swim 10 meters freestyle continuously without assistance
  • Able to swim 10 meters on back without assistance
  • Willingness and ability to follow coaching direction

New Wave sessions will run at the same times as the Winter Swim session options where noted but will be held in the shallow instructional pool. Contact [email protected] for more information or assistance in determining your swimmer's readiness for this program.
